"...I’m not sure it’s one I’d read over and over again."
Hunter Douglas, genealogical investigator, is surprised when the local police department contacts him about two children. An old acquaintance has passed away, leaving two children motherless. Agreeing to take the children to their aunt in Minnesota, he’s shocked once more to discover the oldest of the children is his.
Nicole Anderson is outraged when Hunter calls her, claiming that her sister has left two kids in her care – she doesn’t have a sister! Or at least she doesn’t think she does… She agrees to at least see the children before making any decisions in regards to their care, only to be wrapped around their little fingers at first sight. And Hunter isn’t too hard on the eyes either!
Secrets of the Heart is full of suspense and mystery as Hunter and Nicole try to unlock the secrets of the children’s mother. The deeper they delve into the family’s past, the more Nicole realizes that she didn’t know her parents at all. She has a hard time merging the man she call father and loved with the man who would pay for the upkeep of a child he had with another woman. Or is that really what happened?
This book kept me guessing from page one. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, something would happen that would take the book in another direction. The characters of Shanna and Kyle, the two children, made me want to wrap my arms around them and comfort them. Their antics and reactions were exactly as you would expect from children their age. It was easy to follow the lives of Hunter and Nicole as well. Their characters were very well developed and well-rounded. It wasn’t hard to conjure them in my mind as I read the story. Even the secondary characters came to life, jumping off the pages.
Over all, Secrets of the Heart is a well-written tale. I enjoyed reading the book, but I’m not sure it’s one I’d read over and over again. It had some editing errors throughout, but nothing major. If you enjoy intrigue, suspense, and mystery all wrapped up in a romance, then you should give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
