More than a little emotionally charged, Kristan Higgins’ stories tend to leave your heart full to the brim and you wanting more and more! In The Next Best Thing you find yourself in such a predicament though maybe not for the same reasons. I found myself routing for the hero yet at the same time confused with whether or not I should route for him to win the heart of the heroine. See the thing is, Higgins’ story is based on a heroine who is widowed at a young age…and the hero is the brother who introduced them!
Frankly put, at best the heroine is a likable good girl…and at worst, she’s very naive and a bit self-centered. While I am a huge Higgins fan, I will admit that I found it very hard to like this heroine. She tended to take for granted the one who helped her through a major tragedy, the one who’d been friends with her long before she fell for his older brother.
