Carolynn’s Clues :: Goodbye, with Love, on Valentine’s Day

by Carolynn Carey on February 14, 2012

As I started writing today’s column, which will be my last “Carolynn’s Clues,” it occurred to me that, ironically, I’m saying goodbye on Valentine’s Day. My column has, since its beginning, appeared on the second Tuesday of every month, and this month, February of 2012, the second Tuesday falls on Valentine’s Day.

As a dedicated romance writer and reader, I have a special affinity for Valentine’s Day. Despite the rampant commercialization, I always enjoy the special attention given to romance around this particular date.

Thinking back, I enjoy reflecting on some of the more interesting Valentine’s Days I’ve experienced. There was the year my fiancé (now my husband) gave me a gorgeous charm bracelet complete with a heart-shaped charm. A tiny cupid with an arrow in his bow was perched on the front of the charm, and the date was engraved on the back. I adored that bracelet, which now is a little beat up after many years of wear, but I still love the bracelet and the man who gave it to me.

Of course the most memorable Valentine’s Day for me was the year our daughter was born on February 14. That event called for another charm for my bracelet, this one of a little girl with her birth date engraved on the back. I also have a niece who was born on February 14, so Valentine’s Day babies are not uncommon in my family.

I hope you’ll forgive my meandering down memory’s lane on this occasion. Seems I’m having more difficulty than I’d expected in saying goodbye. Writing this column has been a joy for me, but other responsibilities are consuming my time these days.

Thus, I will sign off now, but be assured that although I’m saying goodbye, I’m also wishing you all the love and the romance that anyone could desire, not only for Valentine’s Day of 2012 but for all the days ahead.

Goodbye and best wishes.
