From Lynsay Sands' website:
Single White Vampire is the first in a series about one of the families of these vamps. The Argeneau family consists of the mother, Marguerite; three sons: Lucern, Bastien and Etienne; and a daughter Lissianna.
Lucern being the oldest got the first story, and what a story! Lucern is the writer in the family. He writes non-fiction which includes, but isn't restricted to, historical texts (Who better to write about history than someone who was there?). I say 'isn't restricted' because while he really only writes non-fiction accounts, his latest works- retelling of personal history such as how family members met and fell in love with their lifemate- have been published as fictional romance. This is something he is rather put out with, but can hardly complain about. A smart vampire does not admit to the world that he's a vampire, does he?
If that isn't upsetting enough for my 600-year-old, slightly grumpy and weary-with-life vampire, I then dumped him in the most terrifying place I could think of (at least the most terrifying place for an unsociable, traditionalist vampire who is uncomfortable with the forward nature of modern women). Can you imagine where that might be?
Maybe I shouldn't tell.
Oh, all right, I dropped him in the middle of a Romantic Times Booklovers Convention. That's right, our Lucern is suddenly surrounded by a couple thousand rabid female romance fans.
If that isn't horrifying enough, I dumped him there with Kate C. Leever, a lovely young editor who dazzles (translate that to scares the heck out of) our Lucern with her smarts, ambition and modern mentality. Talk about your generation gap!
Ah, I had such fun with this book! And I did something I've never done before, I used real people as the basis for some of the secondary characters. The two most notable are Chris Keyes, and Kathryn Falk, who both play supporting roles in the romance between Lucern and Kate. I suppose I should explain that Chris is based on my editor, Christopher Keeslar; but Kathryn Falk, Lady Barrow, is herself. She is the woman behind Romantic Times magazine, the convention itself and many other interests.
Anyway, I tortured the heck out of my vampire, Lucern, on his path to true love, and-though it is shameful to admit it- rather enjoyed doing so. Is it any wonder than that once finished, I just had to start on Etienne's story and then Bastien's? But that's another tale entirely. Two actually.
