Hello! We’re so glad you dropped in to check out the WeWriteRomance.com blog. Here you will find all kinds of things from site news to guest bloggers to just about anything related to romance novel books and reviews. If you know of something that would fit in with our site, some new little tidbit of news, we’d love it if you dropped us a line so that we could share it with others.
I’ve recently been wondering how romance readers and authors alike feel about the Google Books project. Have you tried it? I have. I’m not sure how I feel. It’s neat to read excerpts and tiny snippets, but I am still not sure how ‘right’ it is to have your work posted so freely. I’ve read all the terms, all the legalese, etc. I know they’re only supposed to have posted a ‘fair use’ snippet unless they have a partnership with the publisher and/or author who owns the current copyright…but I’ve seen a lot more on there than what I would consider to be ‘fair use’.
The excerpts here on WWR are usually provided by the authors. Most of which were provided for books we’ve reviewed. And if they weren’t, they were approved by the publisher. The thing is, if you look at those romance novel excerpts you’ll only find about 1/2 of a written page give or take soem. But the Google Books preview shows a lot more than that.
Hmmm…
Do you find Google Books useful or an infringement on copyright laws? I’d love to hear what others think!
Champagne Books is running a contest for free books from Feb 1 to April 11, with a winner each week. To be eligible to win, you have to guess the correct “before” picture for the author of the week. The weekly winner will be drawn randomly from the correct entries. To enter go to http://champagnebooks.com/Contest.htm and follow the instructions.
Do you do it every year? I do. I always make a list of New Year’s Resolutions. I think, “Hey, I need to lose weight. Okay, I’ll do it after the first of the year.” Or, “Gosh, I need to save money. I’ll start after the first of the year.” And while this year is no different, definitely need to lose weight and save money. I have another resolution in mind. One that will bring me happiness and moments of peace. Reading!
I’m going to put reading at the top of my resolution list. And not just a general heading like “reading”. I want to be more specific and make a list of books I want to finish. I always want to make it clear how many, when, etc. A good friend of mine tells me often that generalizing something on a todo list often gives you the ability to say I’ve done it…when you might only have done part. Like writing. You can note on a todo list that you need to write more. But when you say you need to write 5 pages a day, well, that’s another pickle altogether.
So…up first for me is reading the latest Nora (and the final one in her trilogy). I also want to read at least one new book per month. I used to could say one per week or even more, but since the kids take up a lot of my time and the web business (which I’m oh, so thankful for), I can’t do nearly that much reading any longer.
I’m also hoping to bring in January with some great book giveaways. I recently received a wonderfully full shipment of books from Kensington to use as giveaways. As I understand it, WeWriteRomance.com is now on their web partners list and I should be receing a few new books each month that can be used as giveaways, promotions, reviews, etc. I’ll post more on that soon.
Have a great New Year!

I found an interesting site this morning that has the funniest “bad” romance novel openings I’ve heard in a long time. The only reason I’m posting this is because I think writers need to know that readers pay close attention to that first line, first scene, first chapter so much that if they think the lines bad…everyone will know it by lunch because of how easy it is to be online…
Here’s an excerpt:
15.”He snapped my bra like a Concord taking off, and I was unhooked for love.”
14.”Yes, she was a woman who had once been a man, but she still knew how to flutter her eyelashes as well as those other hussies.”
13.”The heaving waves on the vast, ink-black ocean sent a salty spray over the proud bow of the three-masted ship, leaving beads of water on the exposed alabaster skin above the bodice of the tall, raven-haired woman who stood sobbing on the deck, her salty tears mixing with the storm-tossed sea.”
12.”Scarlet’s hair was as red as my persistent canker sore.”
11.”Nicole let the silk blouse fall from her shoulders, wrapped her left leg around James and deftly cut some cheese.”
10.”Robert was new at this prison thing, and he felt frightened and confused. But the moment he laid eyes on #472825994, he became a prisoner of love.”
9.”Sam liked to hump.”
8.”Though flanked by two swarthy state troopers, Paula found her gaze drawn to the chubby saxophonist.”
7.”It was a dark and horny night…”
