Thanks to the hostesses at We Write Romance for having me visit today! For those who don’t know me, my name is Cindy. I’m a voracious reader of paranormal romance as well as an author, and I loaded Motor City Fae, my Carina Press launch title with lots of the things I love. Humor, fantasy, mystery, action, a strong heroine and a gorgeous hero who wants to protect her anyway. A few steamy scenes, and a few that are downright tender. Elves, werewolves, witches, and wizards—all coexisting in modern Detroit. Oh—and don’t forget characters strong enough to have books of their own in the future. I’m having a ball with this world, and I hope readers will enjoy it too.

Also, as part of my blog tour promoting Motor City Fae, I’m running a contest. All you have to do is pop over to my website, go to the “contact Cindy” page, and tell me which blog you saw me on and answer the question of the day. At the end of June, I’ll be giving away a $20.00 gift card to your choice of Borders, B&N, or Amazon. You can enter once for each blog stop.

Today’s question is: What is Meagan’s career in Motor City Fae?

You can read the complete first chapter online here, and click here to find out more about how to purchase the book. You can find me on the web at:

Wife Goes On

Wife Goes On

“…will definitely entangle you…”

Wife Goes On is a story about four women who suddenly find themselves facing divorce and how they accept reality and move forward with their lives. This novel will make you laugh and cry with compassion.

First, you have Diane who is a mother of two. Diane’s husband’s gambling habit has led them to bankruptcy and divorce.

Then there’s Lana who had a very public breakup with her Hollywood husband and ended up having to change her name! Lana tries to remove herself from the public eye by running a furniture store.

Next is Annette who’s a jaded divorce attorney. Annette’s husband leaves her for another man.

And then there’s Bonnie. Bonnie’s a former homecoming queen and mother of two who lives with an abusive husband.

The four ladies meet by chance in Lana’s furniture store and soon find themselves looking to each other for support. It’s through that support that they realize divorce isn’t the end of their lives…just the ones that they knew. And they discover that it can be a chance to move forward and live again.

Taming the Beast

Taming the Beast by Heather Grothaus

“…heart-wrenching beauty and the beast tale…”

Heather Grothaus’ Taming the Beast is a magnificent, heart-wrenching beauty and the beast tale that will enrich your heart.

There are just two many things I loved about this book to name, so I thought I’d share a few things I didn’t. Like how I couldn’t put it down! I’ve had very few books I couldn’t truly put down and get a good nights sleep, but this one was definitely one of those. You were immediately enthralled by the characters to the point you couldn’t wait to read more.

Another thing I didn’t like was that it made me cry! It takes a very good writer and a super touching story to make emotion well up enough for me to cry over a story in a book. This one has it all. From the heroes plight to the heroine’s heartbreak you can just feel what they’re going through.

Michaela Fortune has a nickname…some call her Miss Fortune. They believe she’s clumsy and not worthy of their time. That is until she befriends the daughter Lord Tornfield and wins his favor in a singing contest. Little does she know that’s the beginning of a life filled with intrigue, misunderstandings, betrayals, and murder. Everything in her life will be turned upside down. And when she’s at her lowest, heartbroken and humiliated she finds herself responding to a summons from the land’s overlord Lord Cherbon. The son of the Cherbon Devil. Rumors say he’s scarred where he once was beautiful. They say he’s just as evil as his father. So what on earth was she doing offering to marry him?

Blind Consent by Michael Davis

“…a riveting thriller that will hold you captive…”

Blind Consent by Michael Davis is a riveting thriller that will hold you captive from start to finish!

Set in a small, impoverished Shenandoah Valley town, Blind Consent holds you on the edge of the mystical while setting in motion an intriguing plot twisted nicely with a touch of romance. Again I do hesitate to call what Mr. Davis writes romance, but it doesn’t matter because romance readers will not be disappointed by what he has delivered.

I write local history books as well as romance novels; and although I write contemporary rather than historical romances, I do find that things I uncover in my non-fiction research end up sparking ideas for my fiction.

Brass Plate

Originally, I was going to write a blog about the lure of the Mediterranean man (and this is where my fellow authors start groaning: ‘Kate’s going to bang on about how wonderful Antonio Banderas is…’ – well, yeah, he is), or about sexy archaeologists (my September UK release, Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded – out in Australia next month and as a Presents in the US in Jan 09 – stars a gorgeous archaeologist), or about how I’m trying to sneak a reindeer past my editor in my current book. (Yes, I did say ‘reindeer’. Setting for me is important because it reflects the conflicts in the relationship. So I really do need this reindeer!)

But then I spent Saturday with my non-fiction hat on, doing location research. And I discovered this incredible brass, dating from 1384, in a tiny country church.

It’s very similar to the tomb that inspired poet Philip Larkin to write An Arundel Tomb. The line I’m thinking about is the one describing the earl with an empty glove, because he’s removed it so he can hold his wife’s hand.

The last line of that poem is incredibly moving: What will survive of us is love.

And it got me thinking: this is what romance novels are about. Why we read them. Why we write them.

Brass Plate

Love.

How do you know it’s love? Sometimes – as Nicola Marsh put it, in her post – it’s a matter of opposites being attracted and completing each other. (I love those kind of stories. Possibly because I’m married to a man that many would say is my complete opposite. Actually, we have similar viewpoints on the important things, so it works. It doesn’t matter that I’m the nerdy, clumsy academic and he’s the practical one who’s good at sport: together, we’re a team.)

Sometimes it’s something that creeps up on you unawares: the best-friend-to-lovers story (also a favourite of mine – in Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded, Alex and Bel are great friends. They just take a while to realise that their previous relationships all went wrong because nobody matched up to… well, each other).

Sometimes it’s the tall, dark, handsome stranger whose smile makes your heart turn over and then you find yourself acting completely out of character – as Becky does when she meets Leandro in The Spanish Doctor’s Love Child.

And then something happens. Something that makes the hero and heroine realise how much they love each other. I absolutely hate writing the end of a book, because it means I have to say goodbye to the characters; but I know that, after the book finishes, their love will continue. So really, it’s a happy ending rather than a sad one (and I can always sneak favourite characters in to future books: another bad habit of mine!).

My question is: what would make you realise it’s love?

I’ll choose a winner from the commenters – the prize is a signed copy of my latest US release, The Spanish Doctor’s Love Child (though it will be a UK edition, as I haven’t had my US copies through yet!).

The Spanish Doctor's Love Child by Kate Hardy

Kate’s current release, The Spanish Doctor’s Love Child by Kate Hardy, is available in the US as a Presents Extra (and is also still available as a Medical Romance from the Mills and Boon website in the UK). You can find out more on her website on http://www.katehardy.com or her blog http://katehardy.blogspot.com – there’s an excerpt on the eHarlequin website as well as her own website. Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded is available next month in Australia and in January 09 in the US; it’s also still available from the Mills and Boon website in the UK.)

The versatile wonder of Harlequin, Kate Hardy, will join us Monday, October 13th. Kate not only writes for Harlequin Presents/Mills & Boon Modern, but she also writes Medical romances for Harlequin as well.

Here’s a bit more about Kate…

Kate Hardy lives just outside Norwich, England. She’s always loved books and could read before she went to school. She always knew that she wanted to be a writer, and her parents bought her a proper typewriter for her sixth birthday. Her first stories were all about ponies or outer space, but then she discovered Mills & Boon when she was 12 and decided this was what she wanted to do.

Following a degree in English, Kate started work as an accountant, and hated every second of it! All the clients asked why she wasn’t working in PR — so she went into marketing communications for the next 10 years. In between studying for two sets of professional exams, Kate continued to write short stories and novels. And her husband supported her every step of the way, even buying her first computer for her!

When Kate’s son, Chris, was born in 1997, she decided to go freelance so she could spend time with her baby. She became a health journalist and copy editor but never lost her love of romance. When Kate was pregnant with her daughter, her husband suggested combining her two loves by writing medical romances. Kate started reading them and was instantly hooked.

At six weeks old, Chloë spent her first Christmas in the hospital with bronchiolitis. The only way Kate could cope was to pretend it was happening to someone else — so she started writing A Baby of Her Own in longhand at Chloë’s bedside. Her agent liked the first three chapters. So did Mills & Boon. The final manuscript was accepted on Chloë’s first birthday, and published on Chloë’s second birthday.

When she isn’t writing medical romances or health articles, looking after the children or raising funds for Chris’s school, Kate enjoys relaxing with the family — going to the beach, playing games, reading stories and watching films. She also loves cooking (but not the dieting that goes with it) and she reads a lot. She’d quite like to try rappelling, parascending and scuba diving, but as she’s terribly clumsy, she thinks it’s much safer to let her heroines do it for her.…

Kate most recently was awarded the RNA Romance Prize (a UK equivellant of the RWA Rita Award) for Breakfast at Giovanni’s (US title ‘In Bed With Her Italian Boss’)!
