FINDING TIME

By Julie Cohen

“How do you find time to write?”

That’s probably the question that people ask me the most, and it’s a fair enough question. For the first two years of my career as a published author, I wrote three or four books a year whilst also working a demanding full- time teaching job. I quit my teaching job when I had my son, but I kept up the word count while changing nappies, going to playgroup and nursing colds. Now I like to say I’m a full-time author, but in reality, you’re never a full-time anything when you’ve got a young child at home.

My usual answer to this question is quite truthful, and it’s this: I write when my son Nina Jones hi ressleeps, and now that he’s older, I write while he’s at nursery. I calculate how many words I need to write daily to meet my deadline, and that’s the number of words I write; it works out at an average of about 1500 a day, which is reasonable.

But that’s not the full story, because actually I’ve found that “How do you find time to write?” isn’t the right question for me. Maybe it was when I was unpublished and writing on hope, but now that writing’s my job, I have to write or I don’t get paid. The real question, the one I struggle with on a daily basis, is this:

“How do you find time not to write?”

Because writing, like any other job, can take up all your time. Even when you’re not at your computer you can be thinking about the characters, or plotting the story, or planning your marketing strategy, or making outlines of questions to ask your editor or agent next time you talk with them on the phone. You can be dropping off postcards at your local book shop or you can be making contacts at your local library. Not to mention all the writers’ groups and websites there are to join, and critique partners’ work you’d like to help with, and research books to read.

Since becoming self-employed I’ve found it hard to turn off from work, especially as I work in the middle of the dining room, so I don’t have a study door to shut. I have to make a conscious decision to shut down the computer and to be there in the moment for my family and friends and especially for my husband and son, with my mind fully engaged, and not flitting off to some fictional world.

My heroines always have a little bit of me mixed in with them, and Nina, the heroine of NINA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF GLOOM, is also someone who finds it difficult to turn off. She’s in love with her boss, and a bit of a workaholic. And when she’s not at work, she’s thinking about portraying the perfect image, buying the perfect shoes, shopping and partying and ringing up her father to make sure he doesn’t forget another dental appointment. She’s always busy, always “on”. Because if she’s busy, she doesn’t have to stay still and be with herself.

And then, of course, she loses it all—her job, her money, her contact with friends and family, even all of her gorgeous shoes—and she’s forced to live in the Temple of Gloom, a run-down gothic building with far too many gargoyles for its own good. She’s got nothing to keep her busy. Nothing to do but be still, and watch, and listen to herself, and learn.

And that’s when her real story, the story of the real Nina, begins.

I look for those moments in my own life: the ones when I can be still and present. Where I can find the courage not to write. I don’t always succeed, but I try.

What about you?

75 Books & Counting Contest

Margaret Mayo

Since I’ve reached that magical figure of 75 – who can tell me what my very first book was called?  It was published way back in 1976.

The first three names picked out of the hat will win a book from my backlist, and I would be interested to hear how you think it compares to my present day books.  There’s no denying that they have changed over the years.

Teryl Cartwright Hi! Thank you We Write Romance for letting me visit. My name is Teryl Cartwright and my book is called A Sensible Match which is a Regency romance about the sometimes disastrous and sometimes wonderful results of matchmaking. Abby and Edwin, my fantastic and witty combatants, fight each other, their meddling families and fate itself. The big question for the reluctantly thrown together couple is simply this–can you choose whom to love?

A Sensible Match by Teryl Cartwright
Matchmaking is relevant today—not because of those annoying websites, but because we pick and choose everything from our schools to churches to home address. The internet has even given us freedom to choose relationships without the limits of geography, age or background. You just can’t get away from all the matchmaking we have around us! So I guess I wanted to write about matchmaking because it has a lot to do with the idea of whether we choose our destiny or it chooses us.

Why my enormous interest in matchmaking? I had it done to me (and it failed) until my husband and I decided to see why we were so “perfect for each other”. Some other neat facts about me—I have a horse which I snuck into the story, my favorite authors, Georgette Heyer and M.C. Beaton, were also “included” in this romance along with some inside jokes about being a pastor’s wife (which I know well).

Do you do it every year?  I do.  I always make a list of New Year’s Resolutions.  I think, “Hey, I need to lose weight.  Okay, I’ll do it after the first of the year.”  Or, “Gosh, I need to save money.  I’ll start after the first of the year.”  And while this year is no different, definitely need to lose weight and save money.  I have another resolution in mind.  One that will bring me happiness and moments of peace.  Reading!

I’m going to put reading at the top of my resolution list.  And not just a general heading like “reading”.  I want to be more specific and make a list of books I want to finish.  I always want to make it clear how many, when, etc.  A good friend of mine tells me often that generalizing something on a todo list often gives you the ability to say I’ve done it…when you might only have done part.  Like writing.  You can note on a todo list that you need to write more.  But when you say you need to write 5 pages a day, well, that’s another pickle altogether.

So…up first for me is reading the latest Nora (and the final one in her trilogy).  I also want to read at least one new book per month.  I used to could say one per week or even more, but since the kids take up a lot of my time and the web business (which I’m oh, so thankful for), I can’t do nearly that much reading any longer.

I’m also hoping to bring in January with some great book giveaways.  I recently received a wonderfully full shipment of books from Kensington to use as giveaways.  As I understand it, WeWriteRomance.com is now on their web partners list and I should be receing a few new books each month that can be used as giveaways, promotions, reviews, etc.  I’ll post more on that soon.

Have a great New Year!

I don’t know how many who visit here shop at Amazon. I’ve only just started myself recently. I’ve purchased a few things now and found that most were eligible for Amazon Prime. It made me decide to sign up for a free 30 day trial. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to click the buttons and then have it shipped directly to my door in two days! I also didn’t know that there wouldn’t be tax on my purchases. That surprised me. Most sites I’ve purchased from have added on tax.

Anyway, it was a surprise to me to find that most books are either bundle (buy more than one and save) or cheaper when pre-ordered. And even if you don’t do the Prime thing, you can usually get free shipping on orders of $25 or more. And you can’t tell me you won’t spend that easy enough!

With Christmas coming, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew what a great deal the free trial of Amazon Prime had turned out to be for me.
