Sierra Donovan's first book, Love on the Air was published in 2004 by Avalon Books. Considering her first attempt at novel writing had her writing a horror-style vampire novel, it's interesting that she's now writing what she herself calls "gentle" romance.
Her love stories emphasize the friendship between her characters, reflecting the development of her own relationship with her husband. "That's the kind of love I believe really lasts," she says. "[I]t's vital for us to see what the characters have in common, in addition to the attraction."
Because she had personal experience in the broadcasting industry, a radio station made the perfect background for her book. Not only is she married to a disc jockey, Sierra spent years writing commercials for radio before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She also had the opportunity to voice commercials and fill-in a few air shifts while she was there.
"I'm delighted to say my husband reads my work, and offers very useful suggestions!" she says. "Charlie and I have been married for going on 12 years, and [we] were friends for many years before that. He's still my best friend."
She was forty-two when she finally started writing romance, and she sold within one year of submitting her first book. But she admits she spent many more years than that writing—twenty-eight, in fact.
She's sold short stories to Seventeen, Woman's World, Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, and others.
Sierra says, "Writing is so gratifying because it gives me the opportunity to create people I care about and give them the happy ending they deserve!"
Sierra's Current Releases
Love on the Air was published by Avalon Books in October 2004 and received 3 1/2 stars from CataRomance.
Christie Becker has always dreamed of a career in radio. When she finally gets a job as an overnight disc jockey, the last thing she wants is to fall for the boss.
Rick Fox has been working in radio for over ten years. With an established career, the last thing he wants—or expects—is to fall for the overnight girl. Especially when it's strictly against company policy.
But when the two of them are thrown together in the studio, the static between them is more than just professional chemistry. Their attraction and growing friendship could end Christie's career before it starts. Is it worth it, for a chance at true love?
About Sierra's Upcoming Books
Although she doesn't currently have another book scheduled for release, Sierra is working on a sequel to Love on the Air (and trying to create just the right guy for Yvonne!). She also has another book in circulation.
"I don't write very fast," she says, so it's not surprising that her advice to other writers it to "[b]e persistent in your writing, whether it takes you a couple of months or over a year to finish a book."
Sierra loves to hear from readers, so don't be afraid to write or email. You can find her contact information on her website at SierraDonovan.com.
